MSM, methylsulfonylmethane (CH3)2SO2, is an organic sulfur compound that naturally occurs in the sulfur cycle. MSM has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is used widely as a dietary supplement for treating arthritis in people. According to the supplier, it is USP pharmaceutical grade.
MSM is derived from DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide, a topical gel or liquid that is used in horses to reduce swelling from trauma), and it appears naturally in small amounts in the bloodstream as well as in milk, vegetables, fruits, and grains.
Balanced Equine MSM is pure, 99.9%.
There are no known side effects in horses.Â
There are no fillers or artificial ingredients.
MSM can be fed with any of the mineral mixes, Equine Amino, Postbiotic Gut Support, Hydrate Support and the toxin binders Elitox and Mycosorb A+. This article on toxin binders explains their differences.
MSM is a nutritional supplement product for inclusion in horse’s feed. Product has no therapeutic effect and is designed to be administered in a feed for voluntary ingestion for horses.
Animal consumption only.
Per day:
High rate for 500 kg horse – 30 g per (6 g per 100 kg)
Standard rate for 500 kg horse 20 g per (4 g per 100 kg)
Mix with feed. Ideally divide amount between meals if feeding more than once per day.
There have been a number of studies of MSM in people, other animals and a limited number in horses. Some examples:
